Attendees gain practical information on leading associations and professional societies, acquire knowledge on membership strategies, professional education, communication, leadership, meeting planning, advanced technology, and governance. Additionally, the DFWAE Exhibit Hall presents opportunities to network with suppliers, service providers, and hospitality groups. Opening Session | DEI in Associations: Improving Your Impact, Sharon Newport, CAE

Association executives are dedicated stewards who invest greatly in the success of their team and their association. For many, DEI is new and likely evokes new emotions as you travel in your journey. It’s important to normalize and evolve your understanding of the journey. We will explore some of the key frameworks, terminology, and questions that will help you improve your experiences and your impact every day. 

  • Clarify what inspires you towards improving your impact in DEI
  • Affirm the importance of leadership, support, and accountability
  • Learn the role of awareness and mindset
  • Explore promising practices for associations engaging in a holistic DEI transformation

About Sharon Newport, CAE

Sharon Newport is an organizational consultant, facilitator, speaker, and executive coach with clients in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors across the globe. Sharon supports her clients' goals of transformational change using expertise in organizational development, diversity, equity, and inclusion, somatics, and informed by neuroscience to meet clients where they are and support their goals to evolve. Sharon also serves as adjunct faculty at Georgetown University's Institute of Transformational Leadership.

Sharon served as an association and nonprofit executive for over 12 years successfully leading wide-scale strategic, operational, and cultural change. Sharon has delivered keynotes and education, authored content, and provided consultation, expertise, and facilitation across four continents to support and inspire cultural and strategic transformation. In Sharon's early career, she was a documentary television/film producer and actor for over a decade, including television series for The History Channel, Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet. As a volunteer, Sharon currently serves as a volunteer on the ForesightWorks Advisory Council for the American Society for Association Executives (ASAE) and as a Board member for Safe and Sound Schools.

The Ladder Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides support for survivors of domestic violence and low-income women by offering the education necessary to secure employment in today’s technological job market. They work to eliminate barriers to attending class by providing bi-lingual classes, evening classes, online classes, as well as providing childcare during evening classes. 

Career programs offered at The Ladder Alliance include computer skills, business communication, financial management, and more. Several courses prepare candidates for certifications in leading business software  programs such as QuickBooks and Microsoft. DFWAE is proud to support The Ladder Alliance as they create a community of successful women through education, empowerment and encouragement.
